I thought I would give a little bit of information on storing wheat berries and keeping it free of insects as we are again entering the warmer season when insects infestations can begin to be a problem. It is always best to store wheat berries in airtight containers. Since we are not using any pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides while this crop is in the growing stage we also use no pesticides to kill any insect eggs, etc. while it is in storage. Much of the conventional wheat grown and stored is treated with some kind of chemical to keep insects at bay (I have even read that some organic is even treated). Insects can lay eggs on the exterior of bags, the egg can hatch, and you will see a small insect in your wheat berries at times. If you are planning on storing your wheat long term it is best after initially receiving your wheat, or if you expect it has been exposed to egg laying moths and beetles, to freeze it for a week below 0 degrees F and then store in an airtight container. This will help kill eggs if they are present. Have an enjoyable spring season!
